The BEZ covers an area of 13,080 ha in Mộc Hóa Town and seven communes of Bình Hiệp, Bình Tân, Thạnh Trị (Hamlet 1), Bình Hòa Tây (Hamlets Bình Tây 1 and 2), Tuyên Bình, Thái Bình Trung, and Vĩnh Bình (Hamlet 1 and 2).

The establishment of the Long An BEZ is a move to implement the planning scheme on the development of BEZs in Việt Nam to 2020, which was approved by the PM on April 25, 2008.

Under the plan, by 2015, Việt Nam has four new BEZs, namely Long An (in Long An Province), A Đớt (in central province of Thừa Thiên-Huế), Nậm Cắn-Thanh Thuỷ (in central province of Nghệ An) and Na Mèo (in central province of Thanh Hoá). Between 2016 and 2020, three other BEZs will be founded - La Lay, Đắk Per and Đắk Ruê, which are all located in the Central Region.

The main purpose of the plan is to convert BEZs into economic driving forces for local development. Through these BEZs, Việt Nam expects to earn US $42-42 billion from cross-border trade and welcome 7.8-8 million turns of tourists by 2020.
