At a meeting with leaders of relevant ministries and sectors to review the development of the Northwestern region over the past 6 years, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc said more specific policies and mechanisms should be issued to boost the region’s sustainable development, including those relating to afforestation, forest-related occupations, investment, socioeconomic development in the midland and northern mountainous areas.

In the last 6 years, GDP of the Northwestern region averaged 11.5% a year with the rate in 2010 increasing 1.9 times against 2004. IGDP per capita reached VND 12.2 million a year in the 6-year period.

In 2010, the proportions of agriculture, industry and service were 28.7% (down 15.2% against 2004), 34% (up 6.1%), and 37.2% (up 1.1%), respectively.

Increases in investment in the region have resulted in better transport, electricity, irrigation networks, improved education, training, science and technology, and ensured security and defense.
