One fifth of Vietnamese populations hold bank accounts

VGP – It is estimated that 20% of the Vietnamese population have bank accounts, Mr. Bùi Quang Tiên, Director General of Payment Department of the State Bank of Việt Nam said at a recent press briefing.

Up to now, about 14% of Việt Nam’s payment means are conducted without cash, 42 million bank cards have been issued, and 13,500 ATMs have been installed in Việt Nam, he added.

In late December 2011, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng approved a project on speeding up non-cash payments for the 2011-2015 period in a bid to diversify services and accelerate electronic payments.

Under the project, the Government sets the target to slash cash payments down to 11% while raising the number of people having bank accounts to 35-40% by 2015.

At the press briefing, Director General Tiên also announced that the Banking Việt Nam 2012 Expo themed “Information Technology towards Effective Banking Governance & High Quality Services for Banking Sector” will be held in May.

The event will focus on strategic planning for banking industry up to 2015; new trends for banking technology; obtaining effectiveness in banking technology application and others.
