Party chief visits Mirinae-ravaged Central region

VGP – General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh of the Communist Party of Việt Nam is personally inspecting the central provinces where tropical storm Mirinae just swept through and left the terrible ravages.

Arriving Khánh Hòa Province on Saturday, Party General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh paid a visit to Ms. Lê Thị Hiền, a resident in Vạn Giã Town, whose husband was killed while trying to shelter from the storm.

Working with leaders of the province in the afternoon, the Party chief ordered the local government to spare no effort to mitigate the aftermaths of the disaster, focusing on environmental hygiene and the recovery of agricultural production.

He suggested some solutions to control storms in the future, such as planning residential areas, consolidating houses, planting protective forests, upgrading irrigation works, and modernizing rescue equipment.

Yesterday, Mr. Mạnh visited many sites in Phú Yên Province, including Trường Hamlet in Xuân Quang 2 Commune of Đồng Xuân District, where 24 people were killed and missing in floods.

The General Secretary consoled local residents on their losses, confirming that the Party and the State will give best assistance to them soon. 

* The Ministry of National Defense decided to give VND 1.125 billion to victims of tropical storm Mirinae in southern Central region.

On Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs collected VND 200 million to help the victims.

People in the southern province of Tiền Giang also donated VND 1.951 billion to their compatriots in the central region which was ravaged by tropical storms Ketsana and Mirinae.
