President Nguyễn Minh Triết officially visits Cambodia

VNGOVNet – The senior delegation of the Vietnamese State headed by President Nguyễn Minh Triết arrived at Phnom Penh in the February 27 morning, starting their State-level visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia at the invitation of Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni. The visit is considered very significant to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic tie establishing between the two countries (Jun. 24, 1967-Jun. 24, 2007).

President Nguyễn Minh Triết meets King Norodom Sihamoni

After the official reception solemnly organized at the Royal Palace to him as the head of state, President Nguyễn Minh Triết had a meeting with Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni. The king was convinced that the official visit by the head of the Vietnamese State is an important historical event, opening a new stage for the unity, traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia. “Vietnam is a big friend of Cambodian people for long time,” the King stressed.

President Nguyễn Minh Triết affirmed that Vietnam always highly respects and nurtures the bilateral relationship in the motto of “good neighborhood, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term stability” agreed by leaders of the two countries.

In the morning of February 28, attending and addressing the Vietnam-Cambodia Business Forum, President Nguyễn Minh Triết and Cambodian PM Samdech Hun Sen both stressed that the two Governments will provide best conditions for Vietnamese and Cambodian enterprises to cooperate and do business for the sake of prosperity of the two nations. At the Forum, President Nguyễn Minh Triết presented a grant worth of US$ 400,000 from Vietnam’s Động Lực Sports Company to the Cambodia National Olympic Committee.

Previously, President Nguyễn Minh Triết had paid a visit to Cambodia’s top Buddhist patriarch Tep Vong. In the meeting, Patriarch Tep Vong said, "In the name of victims of the Khmer Rouge’s genocidal regime and all Cambodian Buddhist monks and followers, I would like to express my gratitude to the Vietnamese State, people and voluntary soldiers for their assistance in saving Cambodian people from the genocide and helping Buddhism recover in Cambodia". Such assistance from Vietnam is invaluable, he confirmed.

President Nguyễn Minh Triết pledged to meet the Cambodian Buddhist followers’s requirement for Vietnamese help to build a hospital for the poor.

In his official visit to Cambodia, President Nguyễn Minh Triết had meetings with President of the Cambodian Senate Chea Sim, Chairman of the National Assembly Heng Samrin and PM Hun Sen, received representatives of the Vietnamese community residing and working in Cambodia, visited and talked with the staff of the Vietnamese embassy in Cambodia.
