The center is located in a 254.22-ha land plot, consisting of two thermo-electric power plants: Thái Bình 1 and 2 with the capacity of 600 MW and 1,200 MW respectively.

The site of construction will be cleared and handed over to investors, Electricity of Việt Nam Group (EVN) and the PetroVietnam Power Corporation (PV Power), in 2010 to conduct the Engineering/Procurement/Construction (EPC) contracts.

After coming into full operation in 2013-2015, the two plants will contribute some 12 billion kWh to the national electricity grid per year.

Thái Bình is boosting its industrialization, thus it needs greater electric power supplies. The province will require 250 MW by 2010, 500 MW by 2015 and 850 MW by 2020.

Besides, the additional charge is calculated to sharply increase in the provinces south of the Red River (reaching 849 MW, 1,595 MW and 2,636 MW in 2010, 2015 and 2020 respectively). Thus, the Thái Bình Electric Power Center will help guarantee the electricity supplies in the region, facilitating the socio-economic development here.
