The typhoon, with wind speeds measured at 149kph, is now heading in a north-westerly direction after making landfall on Luzon Island in the Philippines this morning, according to international meteorological offices.

Nesat, which is now churning up the East Sea, will be the fifth storm to hit Viet Nam this year.

The typhoon is expected to reach China's Hainan Island on Thursday, one or two days before it reaches northern Việt Nam.

Meanwhile, tropical depression Haitang claimed the life of a 31-year-old fisherman this morning before making landfall in central Việt Nam at dawn today.

Torrential rains, which have led to water levels rising in the North and Central region's major rivers, will die out tomorrow, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

Wind and torrential rain has unleashed floods, toppled trees and damaged houses in Quảng Trị and Thừa Thiên-Huế provinces, according to the Central Committee for Floods and Storms.
