Hà Nam is one of five Việt Nam’s provincial recipients of USAID funds. Others are Hưng Yên, Quảng Trị, Cần Thơ and Kiên Giang.

Neighboring Hà Nội to the south, Hà Nam is the biggest poultry market with quite a few small breeding sites. Nevertheless, many veterinarians at communal level and local leaders never underwent special training programs on bird flu prevention. Over the last two years, the province has seen eight outbreaks of bird flu.

Through the program, veterinarians, managerial staff at commune level, poultry dealers, transporters, and breeding households will be trained how to curb possible outbreak of H5N1 in fowl and human beings.

Managers in urban districts will be equipped with latest epidemic skills. Meanwhile, provincial-level medical staff will undergo training to design plans for epidemic prevention. Moreover, mass media will be mobilized to raise public awareness.

Việt Nam is one of Southeast Asian nations badly affected by H5N1. Since 2005, through USAID, the US Government has supplied Việt Nam with around US $25.7 million in its effort to prevent and put bird flu into control.
