VN commits to sustainable development goals

VGP - State President Truong Tan Sang will attend the United Nations Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda in New York, the U.S. from September 24-28 at the invitation of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The UN Summit on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is the largest of this kind after the Millennium Summit in 2000 with the adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Over 170 Heads of State and PMs have already registered to participate in the upcoming UN Summit.  

The Sustainability Summit will take place on the occasion of the 70th founding anniversary of the UN.

Viet Nam has positively engaged in important activities initiated by the UN such as development cooperation and peacekeeping mission. The country also did its best to achieve MDGs ahead of schedule, especially on poverty reduction. Viet Nam has also proactively contributed to the organization and negotiation of the Agenda.

As scheduled, State President Truong Tan Sang and other leaders of UN member nations will adopt the Document titled “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” at the high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly and attend the UN Summit on Peacekeeping Operations jointly hosted by the UN Secretary General and the U.S. President; the high-level “Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment” co-chaired by the UN Women and China and meet with the UN Secretary General.

On the sidelines of the Summit, Mr. Sang will have direct contacts with other leaders to boost economic and trade ties.

In addition, the Head of State will partake in the Policy Dialogue with the Asian Association; the Viet Nam-U.S. Business Dialogue on impacts of the Trans-Pacific Partnership on enterprises; the annual conference of The Clinton Global Initiative; have an interview with the AP; and meet overseas Vietnamese community in the U.S./.
