The negotiations of the deal is part of the two sides’ efforts to realize the Việt Nam-RoK Joint Statement on the promotion of the bilateral ties to  a “strategic partnership”, which was concluded during President Lee Myung-bak’s recent visit to Việt Nam.

Việt Nam and the RoK have signed agreements on criminal extradition (Sept. 2003), criminal justice assistance (Sept. 2003), and convict exchange (May 2009).

Closer economic linkages between the two countries become another reason to boost justice assistance in civil and trade fields.

The first round of talks takes place on October 28-30 in Hà Nội.
