VN to ban import of ozone-depleting CFC next year
VGP – Việt Nam has decided to prohibit the imports containing ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) since January 1 next year, according to a statement from the Department of Hydro-Meteorology and Climate Change under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE).

The move is made in accordance with the Montreal Protocol to which Việt Nam became a member in 1994.
By restricting gas consumption in making air-conditioners, refrigerators, foam rubber, and heat-insulating panels, the country is trying to cut the use of damaging substances.
So far, the total import of CFC substance R-12 has been reduced to around 10 tons per year.
In addition, Vietnamese enterprises have adopted alternative substances (HCFC group).
The country is consuming about 3,000 tons of HCFC (mainly R-22) in producing and repairing air-conditioners and refrigerators.
Under the Montreal Protocol, Việt Nam and other developing countries pledged to limit and get rid of HCFC substances soon, and consume alternative ones which are harmless to the ozone by 2030. Việt Nam needs around US $20 million within the next 15-20 years for realizing its commitment.
