VN to build a strategy on climate change

VGP – PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng requested agencies and localities to early submit their action plan to deal with climate change, then formulating a national strategy on the issue in Việt Nam.

The Government chief stressed this matter at a meeting on the implementation of the National Target Program on Climate Change.

The event, held in Hà Nội on Feb. 16, drew the participation of former President Trần Đức Lương, Deputy PM Hoàng Trung Hải, leaders of related ministries, agencies and leading experts. 

The new strategy is expected to figure out general orientations for each sectors and localities to build their specific plans and projects, particularly those on irrigation, emigration, sea dykes, and afforestration.

The PM asked his inferiors to develop perfect policies to facilitate the implementation of foreign-funded projects in this field.

Deputy PM Hải said that it is necessary for Việt Nam to carry out preparation for a possible worst scenario when the sea level rising two meters in the next 100 years. In the short term, scenarios on climate change should be updated to cover the whole country and serve for construction plans,

Việt Nam, one of five most vulnerable countries to climate change, hopes to mobilize around US $9.1 billion of assistance from the international community to overcome that big challenge. 

The country so far has received US $1.28 billion via 21 programs and projects. Other 11 projects, worth US $1.3 billion, are under negotiation process./.
