Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung

Addressing the launch ceremony, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung said that Viet Nam commits to becoming a reliable partner and an important link in the global semiconductor supply chain.

Viet Nam has sufficient conditions to develop the semiconductor industry. In particular, the Government is always keen on promoting investment cooperation in developing the semiconductor industry, he said.

The country also has built a human resource development plan with a goal of training 50,000 engineers for this industry from now to 2030, while adopting a range of attractive investment incentives for companies in this industry, added the minister.

It has established the National Innovation Center (NIC) and three high-tech parks in Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang with infrastructure ready to welcome investors in the semiconductor industry, together with many preferential mechanisms. NIC and these high-tech parks are expected to be important bridges to support the development of Viet Nam's semiconductor ecosystem.

The Southeast Asian country is home to business giants that are willing to cooperate in developing the semiconductor industry, such as the Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel), the Viet Nam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), the Corporation for Financing Promoting Technology (FPT), and CMC Corporation.

In addition, more and more semiconductor giants from the United States, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and European countries are showing interests in Viet Nam and some have launched factories in the country.

Recently, Viet Nam and the U.S lifted their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership during President Joe Biden's Viet Nam Viet Nam last September, enabling the two countries to enhance their cooperation in various fields, including in the semiconductor industry.

Currently Viet Nam totally relies on overseas suppliers for semiconductor chips. Only two domestic firms - Viettel and FPT – get involved in the chip design stage, while foreign invested firms mainly engage in the stages of chip design processing, assembly, and testing./.
